Commercial Battery Storage at Taylor’s Farm Shop

Discover how parallel AlphaESS STORION-TB125 systems and DC extension cabinets provide more than 1 MWh of storage for solar, steam and Organic Rankine Cycle generation.

alphaess StaX

More than 1 MWh of AlphaESS storage brings solar, steam and Organic Rankine Cycle generation into one coordinated energy strategy.

Taylor’s Farm Shop needed a battery storage solution capable of capturing electricity from several on-site generation technologies and retaining it for use when demand increased. Working with energy storage specialist Immersa and installer JWE Electrical Contractors, the project combines two AlphaESS STORION-TB125 systems with two DC extension cabinets. Together, they provide 250 kW of combined power output and a reported 1,044 kWh of battery storage.

Connected on the AC side, the system can capture electricity from the site’s solar PV, BlueOrc steam system and Organic Rankine Cycle generation. This enables Taylor’s Farm Shop to store surplus energy for later use, reducing the amount that would otherwise be exported.

With 100 years of family farming across three generations, we now embrace a field-to-table philosophy that incorporates commercial renewable-energy solutions.

DISCOVER THE PROJECT AT A GLANCE

  • Battery storage system: Two parallel AlphaESS STORION-TB125 systems, with two 261 kWh DC extension cabinets

  • Combined power output: 250 kW

  • Reported total storage capacity: 1,044 kWh

  • Solar generation: 190 kW AC solar, plus 70 kW BlueOrc steam system and 50 kW Organic Rankine Cycle system

  • Connection: On-grid, AC-coupled battery storage

  • Primary objective: Capture surplus on-site generation and increase energy available for later use

By combining AlphaESS STORION-TB125 systems in parallel, we helped Taylor’s Farm Shop capture surplus electricity from several on-site generation sources and store it for later use, making more of the energy produced on site.

Making Better Use of On-Site Generation

Taylor’s Farm Shop has a diverse mix of electricity generation. The project required a storage system that could work alongside these different technologies and help match their output to the site’s demand.

When generation exceeds immediate consumption, the business may export surplus electricity rather than retain it for its own use. Increasing storage capacity creates an opportunity to capture more of that energy and use it later.

The challenge was to deliver sufficient storage capacity, integrate it with the site’s generation infrastructure and coordinate multiple battery systems within an on-grid installation.

The project needed to:

  • Accept energy from several on-site generation sources.
  • Store surplus electricity for later use.
  • Provide more than 1 MWh of battery capacity.
  • Support the site’s wider energy management objectives.

Parallel STORION-TB125 Systems with Extended Capacity

The installation uses two AlphaESS STORION-TB125 systems operating in parallel, providing a combined 250 kW of power output.

Two DC extension cabinets increase battery capacity without adding further power conversion systems. This creates a configuration with a reported 1,044 kWh of storage, allowing more energy to be retained and discharged over longer periods.

The relationship between storage capacity and power output is central to the design. At 250 kW, the stated capacity represents approximately four hours of nominal storage duration. Actual discharge duration depends on usable capacity, system losses, operating settings and site demand.

This configuration shows how the STORION-TB125 platform can be adapted to a project that needs additional energy capacity alongside a defined power requirement.

Connecting Several Generation Sources

The battery system is integrated on the AC side of the site’s electrical infrastructure, rather than being directly DC-coupled to the solar array. This arrangement allows the storage system to charge from electricity generated by:

  • The 190 kW AC solar installation.
  • The 70 kW BlueOrc steam system.
  • The 50 kW Organic Rankine Cycle system.

By working with the site’s different generation sources, the battery becomes a shared storage resource. It can capture surplus electricity when generation exceeds demand and release it when the business needs it. The DC extension cabinets increase battery storage capacity; they do not change the solar installation into a DC-coupled system.

Specialist Delivery Through Experienced Partners

Immersa supplied the two AlphaESS STORION-TB125 systems and two DC extension cabinets, alongside engineering guidance, technical integration expertise and installation support. Working with JWE Electrical Contractors, Immersa supported the parallel system configuration and its integration with the site’s generation infrastructure.

AlphaESS provides the battery storage technology at the centre of the installation. The project demonstrates how specialist supply and engineering support, combined with an experienced electrical contractor, can deliver storage for sites with more complex energy requirements.

According to Immersa, Taylor’s Farm Shop represents the UK’s first on-grid parallel AlphaESS STORION-TB125 installation using DC extension cabinets.

Benefits of the System Design

  • Greater Capacity to Retain Locally Generated Electricity
With more than 1 MWh of reported storage capacity, the installation provides a substantial resource for capturing surplus on-site generation.
  • Integration with Multiple Energy Sources
The AC-coupled arrangement enables the battery system to accept electricity from solar, steam and Organic Rankine Cycle generation within the same site infrastructure.
  • More Flexibility Over When Energy Is Used
Stored electricity can be deployed when site demand requires it, helping the business use more of its own generation.
  • Extended Storage Duration
The DC extension cabinets increase energy capacity while maintaining 250 kW of combined power output, enabling energy shifting over longer periods.

Commercial Storage Designed Around the Site

Taylor’s Farm Shop illustrates the importance of designing battery storage around the complete energy profile of a business.

The project combines parallel STORION-TB125 systems with additional battery capacity to accommodate several generation technologies. Its value lies in bringing those resources together, giving the site greater flexibility to retain and use the electricity it produces.
