Q&A with Emma, Strengthening Technical Excellence at AlphaESS UK

Tell us about your background and experience in the industry.

I am 48 years old and have spent more than 25 years working in the electrical industry, specialising in solar PV and battery storage systems. Over that time, I have been involved in a range of innovative beta and trial projects with major organisations such as Lightsource, Powervault and Ecotricity.

These projects allowed me to work at the forefront of renewable energy development, contributing to forward-thinking solutions while building a deep technical understanding of system design, compliance and performance. The industry has evolved significantly since the early days of the Feed—in Tariff, a government incentive for renewable energy, and I have been fortunate to grow alongside it.

I am a full scope member of The National Association of Professional Inspectors and Testers (NAPIT), which reflects my commitment to high technical standards and ongoing professional development.
I am also extremely proud to hold the designation of Technical Member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology, (TMIET) awarded by the Institution of Engineering and Technology. Achieving TMIET status means I have been formally assessed by the IET and recognised as a professionally competent technician within the engineering sector. It confirms that I meet a high standard of knowledge, skill and experience, and that professional integrity sits at the core of my work.

What attracted you to AlphaESS UK?

I have always had a soft spot for AlphaESS UK. I have watched the business grow to become one of the most recognised names in UK battery energy storage.

What really stood out to me is the technical culture. Every member of the technical support team comes from an electrical or data background. That matters. It means installers are speaking to people who understand wiring regulations, commissioning challenges and real-world site conditions. The focus is on properly supporting installers and ensuring products are safe, UK-compliant, and backed by genuine expertise. I’m grateful to Mark Hale, James Festorazzi and the team for the chance to join a growing company dedicated to its installer network.

Why are you and AlphaESS such a strong fit?

AlphaESS is committed to raising standards, which aligns with my passion for training, competency and safety. I have seen too many poor installations in the wider industry, often due to a lack of proper education or technical understanding.

My background in hands-on electrical work, combined with experience on advanced renewable projects, means I understand both the theory and the practical realities installers face. At AlphaESS, the goal is not just to sell systems, but to ensure they are installed correctly, safely and in line with UK regulations. That shared commitment to quality makes this a natural fit.

“I have a real passion for training and safety, especially after seeing too many poor installations in the industry. Often, these issues stem from insufficient training or experience. Raising standards through education, competency and accountability is something I feel strongly about, which is a key reason AlphaESS appealed to me.”

How important is training in today’s battery storage market?

Training is critical. Battery storage is not simply an add-on to a solar installation. It involves electrical safety, grid compliance, system integration (making different system parts work together), and increasingly complex software configuration. Whether it's home battery storage or a commercial energy battery solution, ensuring you have the best system for your needs is key.

If we want to protect homeowners, safeguard installers, and maintain the industry's credibility, we must invest in structured training and ongoing technical support. I believe strongly in accountability and continuous improvement, and I am keen to play a part in strengthening standards across the sector.

    What motivates you personally?

Family means everything to me. I am married with three grown-up children and a granddaughter who always makes me smile. Outside of work, I have two English Bulldogs who are more like children than pets. My family is a huge driving force behind my work ethic. I want to contribute to an industry that is safe, professional and future-focused, because the transition to renewable energy is about building something better for the next generation.

What excites you most about the future at AlphaESS UK?

The opportunity to combine strong products with strong technical backing. As battery storage becomes increasingly mainstream, the demand for properly supported, compliant and intelligently designed systems will only grow.

AlphaESS has come a long way, and its continued investment in technically qualified support staff demonstrates a serious commitment to installers. I am excited to contribute my experience, support our partners and help ensure that every installation reflects the highest possible standards.
