Powering the Future: Why Apprenticeships Matter More Than Ever in Battery Energy Storage

AlphaESS C&I team

As the UK moves towards a low-carbon future, demand for skilled professionals in the renewable energy sector continues to rise, particularly as interest in home battery storage grows. Apprenticeships help bridge the skills gap by providing hands-on experience, structured learning, and a clear pathway into essential energy careers.

At AlphaESS UK, investing in apprentices reflects a commitment to both people and progress. Supporting emerging talent helps strengthen the industry, improve customer service quality, and ensure the next generation of engineers, technicians, and specialists is ready to meet evolving energy challenges.

To mark National Apprenticeship Week and highlight the experiences of those shaping the future, we spoke with one of our apprentices, Lewis Hall. He shared insights about his journey so far, the support he has received, and why developing new skills in the energy storage sector has never been more important.

We began by asking Lewis what it is like to be an apprentice in our industry

It is definitely tough when you first start. There is a lot to take in. You have to learn many things quickly, and to do them properly, you often put in extra time outside work, revising and watching videos to fully understand how everything works. But once you get through that first six to eight months, it becomes a rewarding and enjoyable job. It is challenging, but that is what makes it fun. Seeing yourself improve and gaining hands-on experience makes it feel worthwhile.

Next, we asked Lewis how AlphaESS has supported him throughout his apprenticeship journey

I have worked at three different companies during my apprenticeship, and I have to say all of them have been supportive, especially AlphaESS. There is a lot to complete to ensure everything is finished correctly and meets the required standards, but everyone here has been incredibly patient and supportive. They have given me the time and guidance I needed to make sure everything was done properly and efficiently.

They helped me focus on my NVQ and AM2 without unnecessary pressure, making a huge difference. The team fostered an environment where asking questions and learning from mistakes were encouraged. Their support made a stressful time manageable and truly motivated me to give my best every day.

We also asked Lewis how he is enjoying his time at AlphaESS UK

AlphaESS UK has always been a company I wanted to join. About ten months ago, I received a call about an opportunity with the technical team, and I could not have been happier. I really enjoy my job here. I get to be hands-on with the technical side, supporting installers on site, helping end users get the most from their systems, and commissioning larger commercial and industrial battery systems. There is always something interesting and challenging to work on, and the variety keeps every day engaging.

The team’s support has been excellent. Everyone encourages you to get involved, ask questions, and improve your skills. It makes this a positive place to learn and grow, and it genuinely feels like a job I enjoy and take pride in every day.

"Starting out can feel overwhelming. There is a lot to learn, and it takes real commitment, but the support I have had at AlphaESS UK has made all the difference. The hands-on experience and encouragement to keep developing my skills have helped me grow in confidence and build a career in an industry that is only becoming more important."

Looking ahead, we asked Lewis what is next on his apprenticeship journey

The next step is completing and passing my AM2 to officially qualify. After that, I want to continue building on the skills I have gained, particularly in renewable energy and battery storage at AlphaESS. I am especially interested in the technical side, commissioning systems, optimising performance, and fault-finding. The industry is moving quickly, and I want to keep learning and take on greater responsibility within my projects.

This is just the beginning. Energy storage is growing rapidly, and I am excited about what lies ahead.

Looking ahead, I hope to take a working holiday in Australia. As AlphaESS is a global company, it would be amazing to be part of the team in Australia. This would let me experience a different kind of work and lifestyle, broaden my horizons, and bring new skills and experiences to my career in the UK.

We also asked Lewis about his interests outside work

Outside work, I am a huge Bristol City fan and very passionate about football. I am also heavily involved with Slimbridge AFC, where I am a committee member, head of matchday operations, and treasurer of the Supporters Club. It is something I am proud of, and it is rewarding to help the club and its community thrive.

I also enjoy music, cricket, and travelling when I can. I like to keep busy, whether through sport, exploring new places, or simply learning new things.

We would like to thank Lewis for taking the time to speak with us
