New for AlphaESS SMILE-G3: mix and match 4.8 kWh and 9.6 kWh batteries

Home battery storage can now be built around the household, not the other way round. AlphaESS SMILE-G3 systems can combine 4.8 kWh and 9.6 kWh battery modules in one installation, giving homeowners a better-fitting system and installers more freedom in how they design it.

Watch how SMILE-G3 batteries of different sizes combine in one system.

Every home uses energy differently. A couple out at work all day, a family charging an electric car overnight and a home with a large solar array all need different amounts of storage. Until now, a SMILE-G3 system was built from a single battery size, so the ideal capacity sometimes fell between the options available.

Mix and match changes that. Installers can now combine the compact 4.8 kWh and larger 9.6 kWh SMILE-G3 batteries in one neat, integrated system, so the system is sized around the household rather than the nearest standard size. It is one of the most practical improvements to the AlphaESS SMILE-G3 range so far, giving homeowners and installers more choice from a system they already know, and it is available now through all AlphaESS UK distributors.

Why mix and match matters

A system that fits your home

Getting storage right means more of your solar generation and cheaper off-peak electricity is put to use, without paying for capacity you rarely need.

More capacity from fewer units

Pairing a 9.6 kWh and a 4.8 kWh battery gives 14.4 kWh from two modules rather than three, keeping the installation compact on the wall or in the garage.

New sizes that were not possible before

Combinations such as 24 kWh sit between the steps a single battery size allows, so larger homes and higher-demand households have more options.

Room to adapt as needs change

As households add electric vehicles, heat pumps or more solar, an existing SMILE-G3 system can be extended with whichever battery size fits best, rather than being limited to the size already installed.

More choice for installers

Installers can offer customers options closer to their needs and budget, using the same SMILE-G3 inverter, the same AlphaCloud monitoring and the same AlphaESS UK technical support they already rely on.

The SMILE-G3-BAT-4.8S and SMILE-G3-BAT-9.6S can now be combined in one system.

Two battery sizes, one system

The AlphaESS SMILE-G3-BAT-4.8S is a compact 4.8 kWh module that can be wall mounted. The AlphaESS SMILE-G3-BAT-9.6S holds twice as much, 9.6 kWh, in a floor-standing module. Both use lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells and carry an IP65 rating for protection against dust and water.

More ways to size your storage

Mix and match works with the single-phase SMILE-G3-S3.6, SMILE-G3-S5 and SMILE-G3-S8 inverters, which support up to four batteries in any combination. Mixed systems include:

Battery modulesNumber of modulesTotal rated capacity
1 x 9.6 kWh + 1 x 4.8 kWh214.4 kWh
1 x 9.6 kWh + 2 x 4.8 kWh319.2 kWh
2 x 9.6 kWh + 1 x 4.8 kWh324.0 kWh
1 x 9.6 kWh + 3 x 4.8 kWh424.0 kWh
2 x 9.6 kWh + 2 x 4.8 kWh428.8 kWh
3 x 9.6 kWh + 1 x 4.8 kWh433.6 kWh

These figures are rated capacity. Usable capacity is slightly lower, at 4.56 kWh for each SMILE-G3-BAT-4.8S and 9.3 kWh for each SMILE-G3-BAT-9.6S. For more help with sizing, read our guide on how to choose home battery storage.

Storage capacity and power are different

Adding batteries increases how much energy the system can store. It does not increase how much power is available to run appliances at the same time. That depends on the SMILE-G3 inverter, so your installer will size the inverter and the batteries together around your solar generation, electricity use and tariff.

How a mixed system fits together

The 9.6 kWh battery is floor mounted and secured to the wall, while the 4.8 kWh battery is wall mounted. In a typical mixed stack, the 9.6 kWh battery sits at the bottom with up to two 4.8 kWh batteries above it and the SMILE-G3 inverter on top. Larger systems, or sites where a single stack is not practical, can use a second stack alongside. Either way, the household has one inverter and one AlphaCloud monitoring view.

What AlphaESS UK says

“Installers have told us they want more flexibility when sizing storage, and mix and match delivers exactly that. Being able to combine the SMILE-G3-BAT-4.8S and SMILE-G3-BAT-9.6S means the system can be designed around the household, not the other way round.”

James Festorazzi, Head of Business Development & Operations, AlphaESS UK

Already have a SMILE-G3 system?

Existing SMILE-G3 systems with SMILE-G3-BAT-4.8S or SMILE-G3-BAT-9.6S batteries can add the other size, up to four batteries in total. Your installer will update the system software before adding the new battery. Earlier battery models, such as the SMILE-G3-BAT-4.0S, are not part of mix and match.
