Renewable Energy and Sustainable Farming: Powering a Greener Future

As UK farmers face rising energy costs, climate challenges, and the need to diversify income streams, renewable energy has become a vital part of sustainable agriculture. From solar PV and battery storage systems to wind and biomass, integrating clean energy solutions helps reduce carbon footprints, stabilise operating costs, and improve energy independence. Land diversification through renewables not only supports environmental goals but also opens up new revenue opportunities, making farming more resilient, future-ready, and aligned with the UK's net-zero ambitions.

TH Flower & Sons are commercial dairy farmers based in Buxton, Derbyshire. Their site comprises multiple farm buildings, two farmhouses, and several holiday cottages. As energy demands rose due to the growth of their agricultural operations, the client sought a sustainable solution to increase self-sufficiency, particularly to meet the high energy requirements of early-morning cattle milking.

Client Journey and Consultation

The farm had already made significant strides in renewable energy, with a 45 kWp solar PV system installed by Solar Power Provider in 2014. As their energy usage expanded, they approached them once again to explore the possibility of adding more solar generation capacity and introducing a battery storage system. Because Half-Hourly (HH) usage data wasn't available, Solar Power Provider implemented a two-week monitoring period to assess live load profiles and peak demand while the original PV system remained operational. This data was instrumental in creating a tailored system to meet the farm's unique energy needs.

System Designed with Innovative Commercial Battery Solutions

The initial proposal was for a 200 kWp solar photovoltaic (PV) array integrated with a T100 battery energy storage system (BESS). However, due to T100 stock constraints at the time of ordering, AlphaESS UK's partner Immersa Limited suggested an alternative configuration using two AlphaESS H50-O units wired in parallel — the first deployment of its kind in the UK. This hybrid system, with a combined storage capacity of 194.4 kWh, was designed to match the farm's known usage patterns and peak demand, ensuring efficient energy usage with only minimal draw from the grid. The hybrid system enables both DC-coupled PV and external AC inverters, offering a versatile and practical energy solution.

System Features and Benefits

  • PV Capacity: 196.56 kWp
    Modules: DEMGC 585W

  • Inverters: Solis GC40K, SMA
BESS: Two x AlphaESS H50-O (outdoor) units, 194.4 kWh total storage
  • System Type: Hybrid – DC-coupled PV and external AC inverters

Energy Performance

Although the system has only been live for a short time, early performance indicators are promising. The client reports that during the summer months, their only grid usage occurs between midnight and 7:00 am. For the remainder of the day, meeting energy demand through solar PV generation and battery discharge. The available PV output has proven more than sufficient to both charge the battery system and enable consistent grid export when possible. The system was not configured for backup power, as the client's priority was energy storage and grid offset.

Project Challenges

One of the key tasks involved managing export limits in line with local grid constraints. Using the AlphaESS CNI portal, the team implemented a G100 export limit to enable precise and compliant export control. AlphaESS Engineers made minor technical adjustments during commissioning and equipment upgrades. The installer, Solar Power Provider, played a crucial role in the installation. With AlphaESS engineers providing on-site support to carry out the commissioning process and any refinements, Solar Power Provider demonstrated their commitment to delivering a fully operational and high-performing system.

Client Feedback and Impact

TH Flower & Sons have expressed high satisfaction with the installation. They've been particularly impressed with the system's performance, the visual quality of the installation, and the professionalism shown throughout the project. They're now operating with significantly improved energy independence and are already seeing the value of their investment.

The project followed an extended timeline due to several sequential stages. First, the team conducted energy monitoring to enable accurate energy measurement as part of a Distribution Network Operator (DNO) network survey. AlphaESS UK successfully commissioned the system, handed it over, and is now fully operational.

Ongoing Support and Maintenance

Solar Power Provider enrolled the client in an annual maintenance package, which includes a yearly on-site inspection and cleaning of the solar array. Additionally, system performance is monitored remotely by engineering staff every quarter, with the AlphaESS UK-based engineering team available if required, ensuring long-term reliability, efficiency, and peace of mind for the client.
