Do I need an AlphaESS battery system to use the EV charger?
No. The AlphaESS EV charger can be installed and used as a standalone home charger, drawing electricity from the grid. A battery storage system is not required.
Can the charger use energy stored in my home battery?
Yes. When connected to a compatible AlphaESS battery storage system and configured appropriately, the charger can use available stored energy as part of your home energy setup.
Can I charge my EV from the grid?
Yes. Grid charging is available whether the charger is installed on its own or connected to a wider AlphaESS energy system.
Can I charge my car using solar energy?
Yes. With compatible solar generation and the correct system configuration, Green mode can prioritise available solar energy for EV charging. A connected battery can also make stored solar energy available later.
What is the difference between the 7 kW and 11 kW chargers?
The 7 kW SMILE-G3-EVCS7 is designed for a single-phase supply. The 11 kW SMILE-G3-EVCT11 requires a suitable three-phase supply. Your installer will confirm which option suits your property and vehicle.
What charging modes are available?
Green mode prioritises available solar or stored energy when the charger is connected to a compatible system. Fast mode gives EV charging priority. ECO mode lets you set charging times and fixed power.
How can I start a charging session?
Available start options include plug and charge, the AlphaESS App, an RFID card and time-based settings. Your installer will configure the charger for your preferred way of charging.
Can I control and monitor charging from my phone?
Yes. The AlphaESS App provides remote charging control and status information. Available views and controls depend on the installed product, connection and system configuration.
Will the charger work with my electric vehicle?
The chargers use a Type 2 charging connection, which is widely used by UK and European electric vehicles. Your installer should confirm compatibility with your vehicle, cable and required charging rate.
How do I arrange installation?
Use Find an Installer to locate an AlphaESS UK installer. They will assess your electrical supply, confirm the correct charger, complete the installation and configure the app and charging settings.
