Sustainable Renewable Energy Solutions for Healthcare
Installation and Commissioning of AlphaESS STORION G3-H50 at Pendleside Hospice, Burnley
Delivering energy resilience, cost efficiency, and continuity of care through integrated solar and battery storage
In healthcare environments, power reliability is critical. At Pendleside Hospice in Burnley, uninterrupted energy supply underpins patient care, from medical equipment to essential building systems.
With rising energy costs and increasing pressure to operate more sustainably, the hospice required a solution that could reduce operational expenditure while ensuring continuous, dependable power. Working in collaboration with Clique Energy Ltd, AlphaESS UK delivered a fully integrated solar and commercial and industrial battery storage system designed to enhance resilience, improve efficiency, and futureproof operations.
Delivering reliable, cost-efficient energy for critical healthcare environments through integrated solar, battery storage and supporting our installer partners.
Ensure uninterrupted power supply for critical healthcare systems
Reduce energy costs through on-site generation and smart storage
Support sustainability goals by lowering carbon emissions and grid reliance
Working with the team at Pendleside Hospice, it was clear they were looking for a relatively new solution, within their industry, which would provide numerous benefits above the now well-established positives of solar power. When providing these types of ‘behind the meter’ battery storage systems, certainly at this scale, we need to know we have the full technical support of the manufacturer and the team at Alpha has provided this to us throughout this installation.

Addressing Rising Energy Costs and Power Reliability in Healthcare Settings
Pendleside Hospice operates in a highly sensitive environment where any disruption to power can directly impact patient wellbeing. Critical systems, including medical equipment, lighting, IT infrastructure, and climate control, must remain operational at all times.
Alongside this, the hospice faced increasing energy costs and a need to reduce its carbon footprint, necessitating a solution that could deliver both resilience and long-term cost control.
Integrated Solar and Battery Storage Solution for Reliable Healthcare Energy
A smart, hybrid energy system was designed that combines solar PV generation with advanced battery storage and dedicated backup capability. At the centre of the installation is the AlphaESS STORION G3-H50, which acts as the system’s control hub, intelligently managing energy flow among generation, storage, and demand.
The 55 kWp solar array generates clean energy during the day to support daily operations, while any excess is stored in a 120 kWh battery system. This stored energy is then used during peak demand periods, overnight, or during grid outages, reducing reliance on external supply. A dedicated backup function ensures that critical loads remain powered in the event of grid failure, safeguarding continuity of care.
C&I BESS Performance and Impact
Delivering Renewable Solutions The system has delivered measurable improvements across operational performance, cost management, and sustainability.
Continuity of Critical Care The integrated backup system ensures that essential medical equipment and critical infrastructure remain operational during power outages, providing peace of mind for both staff and patients.
Reduced Operational Costs By generating and storing energy on-site and by leveraging off-peak battery storage, the hospice significantly reduces its reliance on grid electricity, lowering ongoing energy expenses.
Sustainable Healthcare Delivery Using solar energy reduces the hospice’s carbon footprint, supporting its commitment to environmentally responsible operations.
Intelligent Energy Management The AlphaESS STORION G3-H50 optimises energy use by prioritising solar power, storing surplus energy, and reducing peak-time grid imports.
Performance & Results
The implementation of this integrated energy solution has delivered measurable benefits across cost, resilience, and sustainability, supporting both day-to-day operations and long-term strategic goals. Key outcomes include:
Lower electricity costs through optimised energy use
Reliable backup power for critical healthcare systems
Reduced exposure to energy price volatility
Improved sustainability and carbon reduction
Enhanced operational resilience
The Pendleside Hospice project demonstrates how healthcare facilities can successfully integrate renewable energy with battery storage to achieve both resilience and sustainability. Thanks to the expertise of CLIQUE ENERGY LTD and the implementation of the AlphaESS STORION G3-H50 system, the hospice now benefits from a dependable, efficient, and future-ready energy solution, ensuring that critical care services remain uninterrupted while reducing operational costs and environmental impact.
