Discover how integrated solar and battery storage reduced grid reliance for a commercial site

This project highlights how AlphaESS commercial battery storage supports real-world site flexibility rather than just theoretical performance.

Faced with varying occupancy, mixed operational hours, and insurance-led installation considerations, the customer required a system that could be deployed with confidence and adapted over time. The AlphaESS all-in-one solution provided advanced safety features, IP-rated flexibility for indoor or outdoor installation, and the ability to scale as site demand grows.

Backed by responsive UK technical support and onsite commissioning expertise, the system was delivered efficiently and is already exceeding expectations. Even during low winter solar generation, the battery has supported site load, reduced grid imports, and enabled export of surplus energy.

This combination of product capability and long-term support gave the customer confidence to invest, knowing their energy infrastructure is secure, compliant, and future-ready.

Client: Moat Farm, Walsall.

From an initial discussion to a completed commercial solar and battery storage project. Helping UK business owners control their energy generation and management.

Site type
Commercial development with rental units, offices, and workshop space.

Primary objectives
Reduce reliance on the grid, improve sustainability credentials, and enable future expansion.

Key challenges
Uncertain future loads, 24-hour usage potential, insurance and installation location considerations.

Solution
Rooftop solar PV integrated with an AlphaESS H50 Gen3, scalable battery energy storage, designed by Immersa.

Why battery storage mattered
Enabled self-consumption of solar generation, supported overnight loads, reduced imports, and allowed export of excess energy.

Why AlphaESS
All-in-one system design, advanced safety features, IP-rated flexibility for indoor or outdoor installation, UK-based technical and field support.

Early performance results
Net positive energy balance, even during low winter solar generation, reduced grid imports, and export revenue achieved.

From the outset, we needed an energy solution that could evolve with the site as it developed. AlphaESS stood out for the system's flexibility, built-in safety features, and the level of technical support available in the UK.

Customer Feedback

What customer requirements or site conditions made a battery system the right solution for this installation?

The customer had reviewed several products, with and without battery storage, for their new site because they were unsure whether they needed it and how the site would develop. They had been quoted various options by other installers that didn't meet their needs.

Having proposed a couple of designs with estimated PV array generation on the commercial roof, it was clear that using battery storage made financial and environmental sense, reducing their reliance on the grid, reducing the site's carbon footprint, and future-proofing the installation. The site was primarily used during the day; however, it was considered that one of the rental units would be used to produce products ready for the next day, so electrical usage would be 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

What factors made AlphaESS the preferred solution for this project?

The site was being developed into commercial rental units, office spaces, and a workshop. The customer wanted to improve green credentials, reduce reliance on the grid, enable future system scaling, and possibly add a backup generator. After meeting various installers and exploring systems that none fully met their needs, they faced decisions about where to mount the unit, given insurance and space constraints. The AlphaESS unit, with built-in safety and a suitable IP rating, was ideal for both locations, allowing the project to proceed during this decision. The insurer reviewed the product specification and was satisfied with the plant room installation, thanks to built-in safety. AlphaESS offered strong technical support, with prompt and detailed responses and ongoing field technician support, which set it apart and reassured the customer that their investment would be protected.

How did AlphaESS compare to other systems considered in terms of features, value, or suitability?

The AlphaESS system didn't really compare to other units on the market; it really led the way with the features it offered in its all-in-one, versatile unit. The price of the unit and the UK support, both via technical phone lines and in-field engineers, really set AlphaESS apart from other brands. Being an all-in-one unit that offers site backup, generator input, additional storage capability, scalability through parallel connection, HVAC to prolong battery performance, internal fire suppression, IP-rated as standard, extended warranty, UK support technicians & remote support, no other product on the market compares. All of these features were of interest to the customer and were thought to add value to the system being installed at their site.

How would you rate the technical support provided by AlphaESS during commissioning?

The technical support was exceptional. The engineers demonstrated professionalism and expertise, commissioning the system rapidly and efficiently. They ensured a seamless handover and proactively monitored the system remotely, fine-tuning settings over the following days to guarantee optimal performance.

System Features and Benefits

  • Highly customisable system: The AlphaESS H50-G3 offers extensive configuration options, making on-site commissioning support invaluable for optimising performance.
  • Professional and responsive support: Communication throughout was excellent, with prompt, knowledgeable technicians attending site and addressing all queries immediately.
  • Remote optimisation and peace of mind: Ongoing remote settings checks have ensured system efficiency, removing the need for return visits.

Did the AlphaESS technical team add value during installation and system setup?

AlphaESS commissions all its C&I products on-site. This approach allows the expert team at AlphaESS UK to thoroughly check and commission the system, while giving the installation partner the space to step back and let the AlphaESS team programme it to meet the exact requirements. The end user benefits from the confidence that comes from having the manufacturer on site, collaborating directly with the installer. It’s truly a win-win for all parties involved.

Was the choice of AlphaESS influenced more by product capabilities or by the support offering?

The choice of AlphaESS over other quoted systems was due to its capabilities, additional features, scalability, and competitive pricing from Immersa. Support from the AlphaESS and Immersa teams, along with the extended warranty, clinched the customer's decision, providing peace of mind and trust in both the installation company and the product.

Beyond grid imports since commissioning

Addressing Grid Dependence and Energy Uncertainty on a Commercial Site

The customer sought to reduce their reliance on the grid and achieve self-sufficiency with this new site. Despite very poor solar generation since the mid-January installation, they have outperformed expectations: generating 70kWh more than imported from the grid, fully supporting the site load using the battery, and earning payments for exporting excess solar to the grid.
